EDI Bénin

The research under EDI is divided in four inter-connected research activities (RAs): •RA1 focused on the production of 23 thematic ‘path-finding’ papers that lay the foundations for further research. This activity was completed during the inception phase. •RA2 aims to develop Hausmann, Rodrik and Velasco’s ‘growth diagnostics’ framework to an analysis of institutional impediments to growth, resulting in the development of an institutional diagnostic toolkit for use in low income countries. This exercise will be conducted in five countries. The pilot was tested during the inception phase in Tanzania, the final report for Tanzania is currently being finalised, and the diagnostic has begun in Benin and will start in Bangladesh in 2018. The final two countries will be decided upon in summer 2018. •RA3 involves carrying out linked RCTs examining the impact of specific institutional changes on a range of outcomes, taking into account the general EDI insight that institutions interact, and that the impact of certain institutional interventions or changes may depend on other institutional conditions. RA3 round one research is currently underway, RA3 round two research proposals are currently being finalised. •RA4 is a set of coordinated studies aimed at filling research gaps using a range of methodologies (theory, micro-data, cases studies and analytical narratives). It involves the study of formal/informal interactions, positive connections between patterns of institutional dynamics and development outcomes and to assess their impacts on a variety of dimensions. RA4 round one research is currently underway and RA4 round two bids will be selected in the coming months.
