Support to the key accountability institutions

The Republic of South Sudan has appealed to the international community for assistance and the key accountability institutions took active part in the formulation of the South Sudan Development Plan 2011-13 that includes an Accountability Sector. In response to this, the Capacity Building Trust Fund (CBTF) in December 2011 decided to expand its portfolio with support to key supply-side accountability institutions. The overall objective of this project is to assist the Government of the Republic of South Sudan in realizing its Accountability Sector objectives of South Sudan as stated in the Development Plan 2011-13. Reformulated in more tactical terminology; the overall objective is to increase the capacity of the Beneficiaries in order to be able to boost accountability, to diminish corruption and improve access to information. The overall objective is broken down into three components, one for each of the beneficiaries as follows: 1. Strengthen capacities to prevent and detect corrupt practices through support to the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission (SSACC); 2. Strengthening national audit capacities through support to the National Audit Chamber (NAC); 3. Strengthen legislative oversight in South Sudan through support of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) administration and Standing Committees. The project will provide a basis for increased accountability from which can be build further in the years following immediately after the closing of the project in January 2014. Four technical assistants have been working on this project as well as many short term experts.
