Technical assistance for the implementation of Recovery Support Programme

The events of January 2011 highlighted the precarious socio-economic situation of Tunisia, particularly regarding unemployment. The result is the same for poverty affecting people living in disadvantaged areas within the country where disputes have started. If the revolution brings hope, its macroeconomic consequences are severe in the short term. In addition to property damage, the economy has had to do with increased insecurity as well as a collapse in tourism receipts and a decline in Foreign Direct Investments. Improvement appears thanks to the good results of foreign trade. And in view of its results, the Tunisian authorities expect a real GDP growth. In the exceptional circumstances described, the political priority was to lead the democratic transition. On the economic and social development, the priority was to support the resumption of economic activity, the restoration of confidence to boost national and international investment, and boost job creation. To do this, the government has expressed support for the implementation of a multi-sector support program to economic activity which should limit the decline of economic growth. The overall objective of the Recovery Support Program is to support the formulation and implementation of the emergency program of economic and social recovery of the government. The overall objective of the mission was therefore to assist the European Commission in its dialogue with the government for the formulation and implementation of measures to hasten the return of the Tunisian economy to its growth path and increase levels of growth and employment.
