Formulation of National Export Strategy
Ranked 133 out of 169 countries in the Global Human Development Report of 2010, Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab region and faces multiple development challenges, which have been compounded by conflicts. Recently, Yemen was still unlikely to meet most of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The accession of Yemen to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) represented a lever to grant access to new markets, to attract investment, and to promote Yemen's economic development and growth. Yemen’s membership request was positively received by the WTO. The EU supported Yemen’s WTO accession from the outset.
The specific objective of the present assignment was to draft a National Export Strategy in partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and other stakeholders (Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Fish Wealth, Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Private sectors representatives including producers and exporters, etc). The experts formulated a comprehensive National Export Strategy to strengthen and facilitate exports from Yemen, with particular focus on development aspects.
